MORTON
ARBORETUM LIBRARY - LISLE, ILLINOIS
The Morton Arboretum, an extensive collection of trees from all over
the world located in Lisle, Illinois was established by the family of
the Morton Salt Company by Julius Sterling Morton who was the founder
of Arbor Day. The Joy Morton Thornhill Estate built in 1910, formed the
basis of the Arboretum and contains the Sterling Morton Library that
was designed by famous Chicago architect Harry Weese. The building was
constructed in honor of Sterling and Joy Morton and houses the many
resource materials of the Arboretum. Opal Glass Studios worked directly
with restoration architects Bauer and Latoza to restore many of the
diamond light leaded glass panels that were bowed or misshapen from
years of weather exposure.
A integral part of the restoration process
included removing numerous cracked pieces and replacing them with
vintage era glass inserts that preserved the subtle quality of antique
glass.
